Our BESS test service is for customers who are interested in knowing exactly how sharp there knives were when they were dropped off and how sharp they are after sharpening. The cost of BESS testing is $2 per knife.

Fore those that are unaware the BESS test system is a sharpness scale that measures the amount of force it takes to cut a tensioned monofilament line. The results are measured in grams. The lower the number the better the result. The typical knife that has been freshly sharpened normally scores 120g-200g depending on edge angle and blade thickness and shape. We recommend sharpening knives that are over 600g. Once a knife is overly dull it is hard to hone it back sharp with a honing rod or leather strop.

We pride ourselves in providing a great service and accurate results. That being said we do not think that having your knives BESS tested is necessary. Knives that are not BESS tested are examined using standard paper cutting tests. We offer the BESS testing service because some customers are interested.

When you have your knife BESS tested by us we provide your results on a business card. We test the tip , belly , and heel of the knife these are labeled T , B , and H on the card. We also write the edge angle that we used for future reference.
